  • Measure the internal diameter and the pipe length.
  • Area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)², then volume = area × length.
  • Multiply by the fill percentage for partial flow, and by 1,000 for litres.
  • Formula Used

    Internal Area = π × (Diameter÷2)²
    Total Volume = Area × Length
    Fill Volume = Total Volume × Fill %

    Worked Example

    A 450mm diameter pipe, 100m long, 100% full:

    Area = π × (0.225)² = 0.159 m²
    Volume = 0.159 × 100 = 15.9 m³
    = 15,900 litres

    When to Use This Calculator

    Use this for estimating fill volumes for hydrostatic testing, flushing requirements, pump sizing, or understanding storage capacity for culverts and storm sewer pipes.

    When Not to Use This Calculator

    This does not calculate flow rate or hydraulic capacity under pressure or gravity flow — those require Manning's equation or similar hydraulic calculations, not just volume.
