Estimate

days to complete
Crew output/hr
Crew output/day
Total hours needed
Total person-hours
  • Enter the crew size and output per person per hour.
  • Multiply them for the crew rate, then divide the total quantity by that rate for hours.
  • Divide by the hours per day to get calendar days, and compare with your schedule.
  • Formula Used

Crew Rate = Crew Size × Output per Person
Total Hours = Quantity ÷ Crew Rate
Days = Total Hours ÷ Hours per Day

    Worked Example

500 m² of work, crew of 4, each producing 5 m²/hr, 8-hour days:

    Crew Rate = 4 × 5 = 20 m²/hr
    Total Hours = 500 ÷ 20 = 25 hrs
    Days = 25 ÷ 8 = 4 days (rounded up)

    When to Use This Calculator

Use this for scheduling, labour planning, and progress tracking on activities like paving, forming, placing concrete, or earthworks where output rates are reasonably known.

When Not to Use This Calculator

Does not account for weather delays, equipment downtime, or learning curve on new crews. Use as a baseline estimate, then adjust based on actual site conditions.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I get accurate output rates?

Best source is your own historical production data from similar past work. RSMeans or similar cost guides also publish typical productivity rates by trade.

Does adding more crew always speed things up proportionally?

Not always — confined work spaces or limited equipment can create diminishing returns beyond a certain crew size. This calculator assumes linear scaling, which works best for open, unconstrained tasks.
